Ever made something just to make something ?
Mood:  not sure
Now Playing: "National Treasure" - better than expected !

Still learning the new blog editor. Wondering if I should switch fonts, or use a larger one. Want it to be easy-to-read, but I don't want it to look like an elementary reader, either ! Sheesh, before, I didn't have a choice, it was all pre-set. Now I'm all worried about everything.

Wasn't really into anything specific, so I made Dottie a shirt that doesn't really 'go' with the corduroys I made yesterday. My fabric choice was from that last Hancock Fabrics grab-bag, instead of using something I really wanted to - I mean, I was mostly making something to make something, so why use up special material ? So, more in an effort to use up the fabric than to really make anything, I sewed a pair of shorts to match. It's cute - you can see it on Dottie and Timey's page - but nothing special. Simple sewing, all of it, although I do have to tweak Dottie's arm measurement in DSD. That left sleeve was super-tight, and that was after I let it out as much as possible. Overall, though, the fit is good, and I'm happy with it, but there was really no need for it, ya know ?

It's kind of funny. I have so much thread and so many miles of material, I actually get happy when I empty a spool or use the last of a cutting. But I'm so parsimonious with snap fasteners, you'd think I make 'em myself in the backyard with a hammer and anvil. I guess it's true - excess breeds contempt.

But I get a sort of comfort from having tons of something. I used to be happy with having 200+ dolls. Now it's down to around 50, and I have piles and miles of sewing goods. I could conceivably go six months to a year without buying any supplies at all ! I have numerous knock-off Velcro hanks, about twelve packages of sewing machine needles, the aforementioned stockpiles of fabric and thread, and so many patterns backed up on CDs that it now takes over two CDs to hold 'em all.  I literally could go probably to the rest of my life span and not use everything - and only buy according to want, only rarely having to replace depleted supplies.

Kinda chilling when I think about it, so I don't.  Not usually. About every month or two, I get that urge to go touch everything at a fabric store. For some reason, ole Wal-mart just doesn't cut it when I get that itch. Hancock Fabrics and Hobby Lobby coupons do not encourage me. 95% of the time, Ifind something from the markdown aisle, where coupons have no meaning. Man, I used to look forward to those ads !

Guess things change when you're not looking directly at them sometimes.

Happy Thursday the Thirteenth !
Mood:  chillin'
Now Playing: XM 80 - 'Chrome' dance music

*Tripod has a new Blog editor. Much apologies while I re-learn a few things ! Looks like we gained color typing and new fonts, but lost the spell-check !*

Not much going on today. Dearest Son wanted a new Thomas train - like the ones at the library - so I proposed we skip McD's and go to Target. They don't have the wooden ones, but they have the metal versions, and he has several of those already.

It's funny to me, as he has them in almost every toy media. Plastic, metal, wood, paper, magnets, and at one point, he had Thomas shoes. It's fun to see him play with the Cars and Thomas at the same time. Trains and cars can talk to each other, when they all have faces !

Their 'Dollar Spot' was having a 4 for $1. sale, so I picked up two hibiscus-print bandannas and some lobster-shaped candles. Guess what Elphie's having for dinner sometime this week ?  Took the opportunity to check out the dolls. Not much there. There were some markdowns on some 'Our Generation' dolls and clothes - but that Target's never had much to begin with. Thanks for the heads up, though, Lindsay !

And I ran right into what's been on my shoulder like a chip lately. Even marked down to $7., I could make all of it. In fact, I could probably make all four ensembles for the price of one. Less if I used the stash ! It's kind of sad how retail doll clothes just don't thrill me the way they used to, but I guess it's to be expected. Still, it was nice to see a display of new stuff and get all excited about going through it, and making a purchase. Now I just kinda turn up my nose at it and go home and make something.

Saw a gorgeous male doll shirt on eBay yesterday. Well-tailored, nice fitting - doesn't pull at the underarm the way mine do, I have to explore that. Only problem was, it closed on the wrong side ! Whenever I make Fiyero a shirt, I either go stare at one of Beloved Hubby's, or look up one on Google Images, before I put the snaps and buttons in. I saw this one, and I verified. Yup. Wrong side. Gorgeously made, though.

I didn't get to sew until late, and thought I'd try something new, for a different doll. So I looked at 'pleated front pants' on Doll Shop Deluxe, for Hi, Dottie. I'd avoided pleat-front pants, figuring they'd be too difficult. Never even looked at the pattern before. Um, it's just a dart. This model's single pleat went all the way to the ankles, and looked more like a seam than a pleat, but heck, it worked and they fit !

Also found out that my cheap nature sometimes costs me. I've had some issues with DSD waistbands fitting. They always seemed to be too long. Well, there's a reason, and it's because I'm such a tightwad. Y'see, instead of printing out the waistband, I was measuring it off the screen, drawing two lines on scrap paper, and cutting it out. Last night, I realized that what's on the screen isn't what's printed, and the print-out waistband was a perfect fit. Grrrr. I could just slug me sometimes.

Anyway, Dottie now has corduroy pants, made from that 25c yard sale Eddie Bauer shirt I made pants for Elphie from. I'm gonna make her a simple blouse tomorrow, then post a photo. Thinking of measuring Leia and getting some specific-to-her patterns this weekend. I can't keep dressing her in Ken clothes !

Ready for Friday yet ?

Movie Week Continues !
Mood:  a-ok
Now Playing: XM 71 - Watercolors (light jazz)

I started this last night - cut the Cars fabric left from Fiyero's shirt into a rectangle, and hemmed it. Today, I made the lined denim bodice - I even double-seamed the sides ! - and gathered, then joined the skirt to the bodice, and added snaps. Not bad ! I kinda wish the print was right-side-up on the part in the front, but that'll happen with a 'random angle' fabric.

I didn't realize it until I went to pose Fiyero and Elphie together (photo on home page)- her bodice is made from the exact same denim as Fiyero's shorts ! Both came from Beloved Hubby's Gramma...

About two years ago, Gramma moved here. She told me she had a can of old sewing supplies, and once they found it, it was for me. Two weeks later, I was expecting a coffee can when DMIL and DFIL said they were bringing it over. Turned out to be a hugh-jass popcorn tin, crammed full ! Needles, wooden-spool thread, fabric, trims, lace, sewing machine needles, zippers, hoops, old promo needle cards... and I've appreciated it all. Thanks, Gramma !

Took Dearest Son to the library. Someone donated five big binders of craft magazines, and I went through 'em all. Selected three. Two with no-pattern clothes designs for me, the other with American Girl-size patterns for various dresses. While I don't have an AG or clone, I want to do a bit of experimenting for other dolls with the shapes. Plus, I showed a physical therapist the website for Sew-Able dolls. These AG-size dolls have prostheses, therapy tools, even wigs for chemotherapy. If they get a few, I can make clothes. Plus, at 10c a magazine, I could spring for it !

My entire crafting philosophy is based on 'Rather have it and not need it than need it and decided against it !' !

I think I may give Elphie and Fiyero a break for a bit. I wanna try a few different sizes, use up some of this fabric lying around. Wanna see if I can do collars for other dolls, too !

Big, busy doll day, all day !
Mood:  happy
Now Playing: XM 150 - Uncensored Comedy

Nice, quiet day. Dearest Son got the dominoes he wanted - poor guy had to choose between classic 'black and white' and 'bright primary colors'. He went for the colors, and has had fun setting 'em up to topple, making them 'cargo' in the train sets, and tossing them up to create 'rain'. I'll have to show him how to play dominoes soon.

It was funny to see that, even though they're all colors, they have the same 'dragon' on the back I remember from my childhood. Reason I remember 'em was because I always taped them, dragon-side-out, to the walls of my Barbies' cardboard houses. To me, they were art.

I scored two watercolor gardens posters, shrink-wrapped to cardboard. These make fantastic backdrops ! Our poor camera used them well with sunlight when I tested 'em, but the new photos I took this evening bounced that flash back, bright. So I need to play with them some more.

Here's yesterday's Cars fabric ! More on Fiyero's page, but suffice to say here that I learned a lot on this shirt ! The cars themselves look a bit better in person, but after 50 photos - yup, 50 takes ! - I went for the best of the lot and wanted to be done with it.

Since I had to cut from all over that quarter yard to fit it best for Fiyero's shirt, there's not a lot left. I may yet find some use for it, but not today. I finally got Room With A View set up, and to do it, I had to clean and re-do two bookshelves, my doll prop storage, and organize some other stuff that was in the way, and I'm about done with dolls for the day !

But I'm happy. I can do collared shirts now, and my curved hems are getting better each time. Elphie's happily relaxing in her bedroom, reading a 'magazine' I made for her last year, and Fiyero's also reading from the shelf above the sewing machine. I can hear dominoes fall behind me, and Beloved Hubby's on his way home. :)

Wheeeee ! Monday
Mood:  happy
Now Playing: XM 71 - Watercolors (light jazz)

Got to treat myself today. Had errands to run, so while I was out, I checked the in-store McD's, to see if they had the Jack Sparrow doll I wanted. Yes ! Choked down another Happy Meal breakfast, but I was happy. You can see Elphie snuggling her new bed doll on the Home page - isn't he cute ?

I don't know if I'll get one for me or not. It'd be nice to take Dearest Son to McD's and get something to eat for me that doesn't come in a box ! But the less I eat there, the better off I am.

I also scored a quarter-yard of that Cars fabric. It's already cheap-serged and washed, and once it's dry, Fiyero's getting a new shirt. Next time I go there, I wanna take Crissy. They have these glitter-pink sneaker keychains for $2. each. If they fit Crissy, $4. is darn cheap for her shoes !

Only problem to having our doors open on the cooler days is these darn flies. So I remembered the fly swatters this time, and already broke one in. Darn horsefly. It makes me happy that he was the first kill on those things.

Store's already preparing for Back To School. Pretty soon's the best time to stock up on home office supplies from all the sales. Dearest Son only has two more weeks of summer school after this one. I have to check his shot records and inventory his closet. He's outgrown so much this summer !

Oh, and I also posted a larger version of the bed photo to Elphie's page. I'd much rather post different photos, but that poor camera's being pushed as it is. I'll keep trying, though.

I've also located the fabric I want to use for a second go at the 'Dr. Girlfriend' costume for Elphie. Since her hat was too big on the green version, I tried carving a plastic cap smaller this morning. And sliced open my left thumb. Owww. Beloved Hubby was wonderful, and didn't remind me that he'd warned me not a whole minute prior to be careful. I felt stupid enough for everyone in the room ! At least now my purse has spare bandages. I soaked one before it stopped bleeding.

And that's about it for today, so far. After lunch, Son and I have some serious cleaning to do ! He immediately claimed the Happy Meal box and is wandering around with the punch-out eye patch over his right eye. 'Captain Jack' came with some sort of miniature map I'd overlooked, and Son claimed as well. Shoot, even when I keep the toy and share the chow, Son comes out ahead still ! He told 'Elphie' that her doll was cute. My little sweetie. I got him two plastic Cars cups from the party section, so he's happy, too.

Hope you are !

Meandering through Sunday
Mood:  cool
Now Playing: "Aristocats", ancient Disney VHS, for Son. Again.

The rest of our quiet weekend. Kitchen's a mess. Living room's a disaster, and Dearest Son's room is beyond description. Tomorrow's gonna be busy !

On the plus side, I got to learn a few things. Dominoes were a big part of the story in Robots. Son was, of course, entranced. We meant to get him some, but forgot, and keep on forgetting. Maybe when we go to Dollar Tree next. Anyway, like his parents when they can't get what they want, Son got creative. His large wooden blocks, the ones his grandparents got him the Christmas he was three, are now oversize dominoes ! He stacks 'em up, and they topple with a satisfying crash.

Goes to show that it's not always a good idea to immediately get whatever ya want. It can thwart creative thinking !

Got a new ink cartridge, and traded in the one from the non-working fax and the empty one for more Office Max paper. We now have three full reams sitting around. And, since they really went above when we had trouble with their color refil cartridge, we made sure they got our black-ink business, too. Which is also satisfying.

Our camera is on its last legs, but hopefully we can squeeze a few more weeks out of it. Much as I hate to, I'll be posting the same images to the site that I put here for the time being. Poor camera's doing all it can - but it just doesn't work as well as it used to. And the site's just not the same without pictures.

I'm seriously considering going back for some of the $4.24/yd Cars fabric. If I angle the cuts right, the characters would be perfect for another Fiyero shirt ! Just hate to spend money, but a quarter-yard wouldn't be much...man, the road to bankruptcy is paved one buck at a time, isn't it ?

I'd make Son a shirt of it, but he doesn't much like the button-up shirts I make. Of course, he prefers the brightly colored T-shirts that are available everywhere. No biggie. Making a shirt takes hours, so I'd rather he wear what he likes, and likes what he wears. After spending so much time on a shirt, I hate to see him get it dirty - and getting filthy dirty is a kid's job !

Right now, though, it's my turn for a nap ! Hope your weekend has been satisfying !

Kind of like Thursday. Did I do *anything* today, either ?
Mood:  chatty
Now Playing: XM 71 - "Romance Dance", Peter White

Only thing I've made so far today is a cake ! No real reason, I just wanted a treat for everyone. Since we didn't have frosting, I added chocolate chips. These sank to the bottom of the batter during baking, but it didn't ruin the cake. It actually made it special ! The chips made a sort of 'cookie' crust at the bottom, leaving soft, spongy yellow cake at the top.

Even Dearest Son loved it, and Beloved Hubby, never one for sweets, ate two pieces. We also drained the last of the milk, which is good. Now I can get fresh during tomorrow's grocery run.

Elphie enjoyed her bed last night. It's not easy for a doll to take the appearance of a sleeping person, but Elphie really did look passed out. The mattress made the difference. At one point during the bed 'construction', I wasn't going to bother with one, but stiff doll lying on hard cardboard box looked really fake. Giving the mattress some contours with the buttons also made the bed look more...'lived in'. Sadly, I had to wrinkle the sheet up after I ironed it, but it worked out.

Otherwise, not much happened today. Hubby says I can set up Room With a View on our bureau top, so once I get it cleaned off, Elphie will have a more permanent residence. Then I can take better bed pictures ! He also hung a much-needed shelf by my sewing 'studio'. That's probably where Doll I'm Working On will hang out during his/her fittings.

But for now, day is nearly done. Elphie's already looking forward to another soft night, and I can hear Hubby reading to Son. (happy smile) For another 'nothing' day, it's been quite nice.

Ever have a day when nothing happened ?
Mood:  a-ok
Now Playing: XM 71 - Watercolors (light jazz)
Yesterday was like that. I turned around, and the day was done, I barely had anything besides exchanging carbon dioxide for oxygen to show for it. It was too difficult to come up with anything to blog about, so I didn't. Today, however, I got quite a bit done. For reasons too mundane to get into, I won't be spending money on dolls or anything for a while. Gonna have to use what I have for a bit, which is fine. I got too much of everything already ! I'd been idly looking at doll beds on eBay and online during the week - I even went on a thrift store-based hunt. Believe it or not, I found one - that was barking ugly *and* too small. Well, recent events changed those grandiose plans, but that's OK. I wasn't sure if the Cinderella/Disney Princess doll bed or the brass American Girls beds I liked (both made for 18-inch dolls) would work. No site told me the exact measurements, and I didn't want the bed to be too low, it'd look bad. Plus, I didn't wanna spend $20.+ without knowing exactly what I was getting. So tonight - I decided to make one !

It wasn't at all difficult. As you can probably see from the inexpertly doctored photo - used PaintShopPro to black out the junk in the background - it started out as a cardboard box ! Hardest part was getting started !

I'd originally intended to make her bed from the box she came in, but Elphie likes more space ! Then I thought to tape Elphie and Fiyero's boxes together, but they were too different. This is the box Beloved Hubby's birthday hat came in - 10 inches wide, eighteen inches long. Box without mattress comes right to the back of Elphie's knees. It was really not quite long enough, but I extended and taped the flaps and added a cardboard rectangle to it. Then it was eighteen inches long ! An impromptu check showed that Elphie can have overnight company, if she chooses. ;)

Must've gone through a dozen sheets and permutations thereof. At one point, it had black stretch velvet pinned to it, with a 'bed skirt' of lace. Ugh. It sounds better than it looked ! There was also attempts to cover the whole box in white t-shirt fabric, which looked worse than the box !

Finally, what I went with was - *A decorative Hobby Lobby bandanna, on sale last year, 2 for $1., trimmed and hemmed so it'd be longer at the bottom than the sides, with lace sewn to the edges. This is the bottom 'bed skirt', but a thin layer of flannel could easily make this into a bedspread. *A 'mattress' - basically some Hancock $1. grab bag fabric measured and stuffed with Polyfil or an old pillow's innards to fit the bed. Mismatched white buttons sewn through keep the stuffing from shifting, and adds contours. *A long 'body' pillow, made from fabric cut from the mattress piece, also stuffed. *A top sheet, basically another bandanna.

That's it. The bandannas are already hemmed, so making it the top sheet was as simple as touching it up with the iron. I'd thought to make some elements permanent, like a fabric ruffle 'bedskirt', but it was easier and more fun this way. I can change it at any time. And, I didn't spend a dime on anything. This is all 100% from the stash ! I hope to make some decorative pillows for it - and add that Jack Sparrow Happy Meal doll to it soon !

Only one thing bothers me. The Dumpster-dived Rubbermaid tote that houses my ribbons and lace is always bulging. Why is it, then, that when I actually take something out of it, it's even harder to close than it was before ?

Best. July 4th. Ever.
Mood:  happy
Now Playing: Starbursts in my mind...

Last night was such a blast ! We could see part of the City fireworks, but a large tree was in the way. Still, even that was neat, seeing all these tiny glitter bits within a tree's branches. Competing with the $1000. a minute City presentation were numerous other residents - it was hard to know where to look ! Some of the stuff people bought was better than what the City had !

And we weren't the only ones out for the view. Neighbors up and down the street watched, and unleashed their own displays, and it was wonderful. Dearest Son got to play with sparklers for the first time, and Beloved Hubby was frequently enlisted to help light over-the-counter pyrotechnics. I went into the freezer and grabbed the big box of fudge bars, distributing to whoever wanted 'em. We also brought the XM box outside and shared some music. Good times. Good times.

Our neighbors had a lot more than the City did, too. For about two hours after the official show ended, we were still treated to a show. Aerial bursts, spinny color discs, huge sparklers, roman candles, little rolling tanks, Black Cats, and Chinese ladyfingers all littered the street and added to the fun. Especially when cars drove by.

And for that extra touch that means so much, Beloved Hubby set the garden hose to 'Mist' and gave us all an extra bit of 'cool'. As the party dwindled down to us and another family, we let the kids play with the hose, and washed down all the debris in the street. Just to be safe.

At midnight, it was all over. Soaked and fudge bar stained, we came in, laughing and giddy and overtired. My ears still rang, but I thought then, and still think now, that it's the best July 4th I've ever celebrated. Leia, who was outside with us, would probably agree. She got soaked, too, but she's nice and dry and smiling.

Beloved Hubby's already planning for a display of our own next year... He can light a Roman Candle like nobody's business !

Dearest Son got two more 'Lightning McQueen's from McD's Cars Happy Meals, too. He already had the 'dirty' one, but now has two clean ones, each with a different expression. This week's the end of the Cars promotion, and you'd think I'd be happy that I wouldn't have to scarf down any food with 'Happy' in the ordering, but it's not over yet. Next up is Pirates of the Caribbean, lots of neat toys. I hope he gets the cannon and adventure notebook. Personally, I want the little stuffed Jack Sparrow doll. Two if possible. One for Elphie's bed, one for my rear-view mirror !

Hope your yesterday - and today - has some magic in it.

Now even lazier than yesterday ! With bonus reminiscing !
Mood:  cool
Now Playing: 'Robots' - DVD rental

Beloved Hubby came home early today, so it's been a lazy day of naps and reading. We're gonna see if we can view the fireworks from our place, it's not worth fighting two hours of traffic each way to see twenty-three-and-one-half minutes of temporary sky decoration.

Ever since I got the latest Fiyero shirt to fit and look good - even though there's three mistakes in it - I've been in a haze. Memory and drive are equal in my mind. They're taking turns. The Fiyero shirt was more than a use for a bit of grab-bag fabric and a way to spend two or three hours of summer. Getting so close to success when not long ago it seemed beyond my skills now and forevermore is...odd. It's not good enough to be perfect, but it's way past what I thought I could do.

So part of my mind is looking back, and part is looking forward. The knockoff TG&Y strapless Barbie dress that so enchanted me in 1976 ? I've made it about a dozen times. That fluffy white SuperStar gown with the silver sequined sash-thing ? I dreamed about that one. Not that difficult. Even the much wanted Deluxe Quick Curl Barbie dress - the turquoise one - that I won on eBay after dedicated searches is also not difficult at all. My dearest 1978 Kenner Princess Leia's dress enchanted me. It looked so complex ! For a kid darn-near obsessed with gowns back in the day, I don't make 'em now, not at all. Barbie gowns are too cheap and easy to come by, Leia doesn't fit or look good in any besides her own, and Elphie's more into costumes than evening gowns.

It's funny. I used to be in awe of doll clothes. While I never really liked Gene, I stared at her clothing ads in doll magazines for hours. Turn me loose in a flea market, and I'd find doll clothes - and fuss for endless hours over which ones to get. Now that I can make things I never thought I could, I'm kind of stymied. Oh, I know I have light-years to go before I could match some of the Tonner stuff, but most of it is in the execution - linings, jewelry, miniature accoutrements - not necessarily the sewing. Isn't most of it made overseas ? Coupled with his recent decree to doll shops, reminiscent of Barbie Collectibles edicts, Tonner's starting to resemble Mattel, which isn't good.

My goal used to be that my creations would look as good as the stuff at Dollar Tree. When I wasn't looking, I sort of went past it. I'm somewhere around Mattel-wear, I think. And I'm not sure where to go from here. Not sure what to try next. But I can't stop now.

I'm really thinking of making something for Leia...
