Now Playing: "Corpse Vanishes" - another MST3K on YouTube
Current Mood : Happy and occupied
Current Image Notes : Well, this is the last of the brochure/catalog. I love the 'Don't Accept Imitations' dictum. Don't know about you, but I can't see m'self handing back a toy or gift, saying it's not a Genuine Barbie item. Especially in 1964 - I wasn't born yet ! I still like the page, just think it's funny.
Beloved Hubby was home for lunch, and while we were out running errands, I found a flea market and two or three sales. Cool ! Dearest Son was ready for some prowling, so off we went !
The flea market was a wash for me, but Dearest talked me into a blue Beetle and a Speed Racer Mach 5, both about half again as big as Hot Wheels. He also found another lightsaber. I didn't find squat. The ‘car combo' Barbie seller was there, and she had some nice stuff. The 2003 Happy Family Grandma's Kitchen playset for $15. was certainly tempting...it even seemed to have most of the chairs and small pieces. Just wasn't sure where or if I'd use it. She also had larger dollhouses for around $40., along with her sorta-trademark plethora of car sets, but there just wasn't anything that really spoke to me. Another seller had several Steffie faced dolls, but they were all badly damaged, bodies and heads. After seeing those, I really wanted something Steffie. Nope.
The first yard sale was a wash. I hate it when there's a sign on the main road with an address too tiny to see - and no other signs. I had no idea where the blasted sale was. Never found it. The next one was big and legible. And, score ! Fetched home four dolls and a styling head. $2.50, total. I'm still not sure why I bought the styling head, but I had fun brushing it out. Some quick research shows that she's probably the Cool Lookz Shimmer 'N Glitz Teresa one. Her hair was mostly still in the original setting - front pieces pulled under the rest of the hair and secured under, and at the back of the head - and it brushed out beautifully. No wild tattoos, no hands to manicure, just a basic, simple styling head. And for 50c, I'm sure to find a place for her big green eyes and brown hair.
The dolls are also great finds. Nothing vintage, but I scored a My Scene Nolee, nude and with tangled hair, but otherwise nearly pristine. I found bits of blue rubber band in her hair, and from the looks of hair bends, it used to be up in side ponytails or buns. At first, I figured she was the Roller Girl one, since her outfit is blue, but this Nolee has a closed mouth - no teeth. Still haven't figured out who she is.
The next doll, I recognized right away as a Diva-mold Midge. A bit more research and her green button earrings show she's probably Florida, one of the swimsuit lines. I've always loved that swimsuit (have two of ‘em), so it's great to have the doll ! She really is gorgeous, but she has that cotton-candy-like hair. Oh, well ! Tell the truth (and shame the Devil !), I was thinking of using her as a body-swap for Cali (California Dreams Midge). Like many of her time, Cali has white spotted legs, so I figured, for 50c, I'd gamble that the body tone would match. Well, I gambled all right - and there's no way I can behead this beauty ! Another Midge enters Chez Insanity...just have to come up with a non-Midge name for her...
Third doll was a generic blonde Lucky girl I only bought for her dress...because it went to the fourth doll, Erika. She's from the Princess and Pauper line from 2004, and again, her hair was nearly factory-perfect. Once I took it out of the ponytail ! All the braids and twists were still intact inside it. She still sings, still has her necklace, and I love her open, happy face. There's only a slight tear to the tulle in the gown, and the usual props and shoes are missing. Imagine my surprise to learn that someone on Amazon.com is trying to sell this same doll for $239. - with ‘new and used' listing at over $80. !
After such a score, I was ready to come home and play ! Y'know, once I've made what to me is a great find, I'm not much interested in hunting any longer. Wish I could have an early success every time I go out - it'd sure save on gas !
